Takamanda National Park Management and Business Plans Revised and Validated

Takamanda National Park  Management and Business Plans Evaluation

Takamanda National Park (TNP) Management and business Plans (2010 – 2014) continued to serve as the working manual for the park’s operations, even after the expiration of their intended time frame. Additionally, the Programme for the sustainable management of natural resources in the South west region of Cameroon Phases III, IV, and V log-frames provided complementary guidance during this period pending the revision of the management and business plans. Following Ministerial Decision No 0181 MINFOF/SETAT/SG//DEFAP/SDAP/SPN/AMEW of 25 April 2024, a Technical Committee in charge of monitoring the process to evaluate and revise the management and business plans of the TNP and its peripheral zone was appointed by the Minister of Forestry and Wildlife.

A consultancy team headed by Professor Nkwatoh Athanasius Fuashi was selected as consultant to carry out the evaluation of the expired management and business plans with the technical assistance of the park service and members of a regional Task Force made of MINFOF and PSMNR-SWR. The evaluation was done in a participatory manner under the general supervision of the Technical Committee in conformity with national guidelines for the evaluation/revision of Protected Areas management plan in Cameroon. The main objective of the management and business plans evaluation was to assess progress and gaps in the implementation of each of the management programmes and provide recommendations that will guide subsequent revision of the management and business plans. Following this evaluation and restitution of the evaluation report, a comprehensive review and revision of the plans, became evident.

A consultancy team was mobilized to conduct an appraisal of Indigenous groups of the Fulani (Mbororo) grazers settling in the park and produce a Draft Zero revised Management and business Plans which was subsequently presented and distributed for comments, fostering a collaborative approach to ensure it incorporated key findings and stakeholder feedback. To validate Takamanda National Park management and business Plans through a participatory process that engages stakeholders, addresses management issues and outlines clear objectives and strategies for sustainable conservation and resource management at Sub-divisional, Divisional, Regional and National levels, the road-map was revised ensuring that essential steps and timelines for stakeholder engagement were clearly outlined.

The Akwaya Sub-Divisional validation meeting of the draft management plan for Takamanda National Park was held on August 20, 2025, chaired by the Divisional Officer. Participants unanimously validated the management and business plans, adopting the proposed programs, zoning, and guidelines. Key recommendations included ensuring stakeholder involvement, enhancing conservation education, improving infrastructure, and integrating the park into a biosphere reserve.

The Divisional validation meeting of Takamanda National Park’s management and business plans was held on August 22nd, 2025, chaired by the representative of the Senior Divisional Officer. Stakeholders, including officials, local leaders, and community representatives, unanimously validated the plans, adopting the proposed programs and zoning. Key recommendations focused on strengthening implementation through multi-stakeholder involvement, infrastructure maintenance, community management, and wildlife protection.

On November 19th, 2025, the Regional Validation workshop for Takamanda National Park’s management and business plans was held in Buea, chaired by the Southwest Regional Governor. The diverse group of stakeholders, including government officials, traditional authorities, community members, and partners, endorsed the revised plans, pending national validation. The regional authorities assured a collaborative implementation approach with all stakeholders, incorporating key recommendations on community engagement, sustainable land use, park administration, and stakeholder collaboration.

The National Validation meeting for the revised Management and Business Plans of Takamanda National Park (2026-2030) was held on January 15th, 2026, in Yaounde. Chaired by the MINFOF Secretary General, the meeting brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including government officials, sectoral ministries, local authorities, conservation partners, and traditional leaders. Key presentations covered the legal framework, park overview, and the revised management and business plans. The participants recommended translating the plans into English and French, and for sectoral ministries and authorities to incorporate the plans within their mandates to enable comprehensive implementation. After thorough discussions, the participants validated the revised plans and recommended forwarding them to the Prime Minister for final approval.

As Takamanda National Park embarks on this new chapter, the collaborative spirit and commitment demonstrated during the validation process was crucial in guiding the park’s future as a model for effective protected area management in Cameroon and beyond.
